Special Freedom Haters’ Announcement: It’s official. Having an AOL email account has now become hipster retro cool!!! Using AOL is like wearing a trucker hat, big black 70’s sunglasses, or listening to the Go-Go’s. It’s sooooo bad it’s become good!

I should know, because I’ve lived AOL’s whole trajectory course; from NOT IRONIC to IRONIC. From the very start, I’ve had an AOL account. I got it when I use to write a column for one of their sites. Out of pure laziness I’ve never changed my email address. Through the years, my loyal love of AOL has been the constant source of mockery by not only my friends, but also the tech savvy world-at-large. Associates have often tried to coax me over to the merits of Gmail (or even Yahoo for that matter). Despite the never-ending abuse, I’ve stuck it out. And now, I’ve finally won!

Yes, enough time and distance has gone by where people can love AOL with smug ironic detachment. AOL is now the unicorn T-shirt of the email address world. Yes, hipsters, you can have an AOL email address and now be considered cool.

Here’s how it works.

We all know AOL sucks, but this time around you can have self-awareness of how bad it is, insofar as the use of AOL is incongruent with what is expected and what actually occurs. It’s as if to say, "Man, isn't AOL so ironic that someone as cool as me would use such a geeky email address.”

AOL is kitschy. It’s retro cool. AOL is the Dukes of Hazzard rerun of the Internet world. Are you listening hipsters? Get rid of that Gmail accounts and sign up for AOL today! Why not be ironic all the way down to your email address?
